Beth Billups is a self taught artist from Detroit. Her oil and cold wax paintings explore abstraction and express narratives that are at once personal and universal. Working intuitively she combines lush color, gestural marks and organic shapes to create layered moments of quiet and noise within each painting. She uses unconventional tools and palette knives to create nuanced variation in line and texture and uses bold brush strokes to create more expansive movement with each mark or shape informing the next. Her work is a reflection of her surroundings and a meditation on our connection to the natural world and to each other. She currently lives, works and teaches in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
